From the first game of Wingspan on February 3, 2020, to the 100th game on June 3, 2023, this board game has become a staple in our family. We all enjoy playing individually without much interference, making it a game where we don't disturb each other. Although we sometimes get frustrated when we continuously draw poor bird cards, we understand that it's just luck playing its part, and we take it as an opportunity to improve our emotional intelligence. We even 3D-printed five different bird nests and five types of food for the game (thanks to our friend players, Ah-An and Ah-Chong, for helping with the printing!). So when we play, we use these 3D bird nests for placement. The food is also in three-dimensional shapes, such as fruit, seed, and fish, all made of realistic plastic, adding to the immersive experience.
In 2020, during the first half of the year, I mostly played with my friends until October when I brought it home to enjoy with my family. Throughout the year, we played a total of 23 games.
In 2021, I purchased the European Expansion which introduced new birds that were said to increase interaction between players. Although it wasn't something we were looking for in a family game, we still bought it to try out the new birds. It turned out to be okay, as it added some abilities for round-end birds. However, these round-end birds were not particularly strong, especially if they weren't drawn and played in the first or second rounds. The birds that increased player interaction were also fine, as they didn't lead to sabotage or conflict between players. It felt like the new bird abilities were stronger, causing some of the basic birds from the base game to be less relevant. The expansion faced similar issues regarding food scarcity and the dominance of the egg-laying strategy, but we continued playing with it. Shortly after purchasing the European Expansion, we unexpectedly learned that the second expansion, the Oceania Expansion, was also released in Chinese. Without hesitation, I ordered it online, and it arrived on April 1.
The major change in the Oceania Expansion was the updated personal player mats. Perhaps the designer noticed the overpowered egg-laying strategy and the issue of food scarcity, so they rebalanced the three available strategies. This way, in the final round, not everyone would solely focus on the egg-laying strategy, and other strategies would also be utilized. It was a great change. Additionally, the expansion introduced a new versatile food type called nectar, which was a real blessing. Nectar could replace any other type of food for the birds, resolving the frustration of not rolling the needed food dice. As long as we had nectar, everything could be solved. Furthermore, nectar became a scoring route at the end of the game. The more nectar used to play bird cards or perform other actions, the higher the rewards at the end. However, this also increased the competition among players to grab nectar, elevating the interactive atmosphere. Although it wasn't exactly what we were looking for, it compensated for the lack of player interaction in the base game. Regarding the new birds in the Oceania Expansion, they gave us a sense of peace. Some birds had abilities that benefited both the player and other players, or the player gained two benefits while others gained one. It depended on the players' gameplay and their decision to mutually benefit each other. Sometimes, giving each other benefits could create a more peaceful atmosphere rather than everyone solely focusing on their own gameplay. It was a harmonious dynamic.
2021 was also a year of rampant epidemic. Our scorecard recorded a total of 721 confirmed cases on May 22, 2021, which caused great panic among the people. All levels of schools announced class suspensions, and the epidemic alert level was raised to the third level. On that day, we played three games at home. Due to the strict epidemic control measures, we tried to play board games at home on weekends. The highest score in a single game was set by my younger sister with 113 points. Throughout the year, we played a total of 46 games, accumulating to 69 games.
In 2022, on New Year's Day (January 1), we played four games. Since we always felt that we didn't have enough fun, we customized our own house rules. We increased the number of bird nests from the original 8 to 9. This way, each game would have an additional 4 rounds, and we felt more satisfied playing. Of course, we had to calculate the highest score separately. Currently, the highest score for playing with 9 bird nests was set by me on January 23, with 141 points. It was so exciting! Towards the end of the year in December, the third expansion, the Asian Expansion, was released. I bought it immediately . It arrived on December 10, and to my surprise, this expansion focused on a duel mode for two players and added a Flock mode for 6-7 players. Normally, it takes about an hour and a half for three of us to play a game. Playing with 6-7 players would be a challenge. After reading the rule explanations, I found that there were quite a few changes. It could increase the game speed and reduce waiting time. However, we haven't played Flock mode yet. The duel mode intensifies player interaction. In addition to updating end-of-round objectives for two players, there is a duel map. Every time a new bird is played, each player has to place their own duel marker on the map. This marker affects the scoring of end-of-round objectives, can determine the end of the game, or provide additional rewards such as gaining an extra food. Since the map is shared, if the opponent places a duel marker in a certain spot, you cannot place yours there, which leads to more intense strategic offense and defense. Sometimes, you have to benefit yourself, and other times, you have to block your opponent's path. It's a very competitive mode, and we played six games in this duel mode. In the last game, we even got angry. According to the scorecard on January 2, 2023, we wrote that we would no longer play this mode. It's clear that this fiercely competitive mode is not suitable for a family game. However, the new birds added to the game can still be played with the base game and the first two expansions. Most of the new birds have stronger abilities, so the more we play, the smoother it gets. In 2022, we played a total of 29 games, bringing the cumulative total to 98 games.
We were approaching 100 games, but in a duel on January 2, 2023, during the New Year holiday, things went sour. Due to the inherent luck factor, if the opponent has exceptionally good luck and consistently collects food eggs, while you're struggling to play bird cards, it can be quite frustrating. On top of that, with the duel map, if the opponent uses a duel token to block your position, it's like adding fuel to the fire. That game was just a series of such frustrating situations, and we forgot who was the one exploding in anger. We simply didn't want to play this duel mode anymore.
In a fit of anger, we stopped at 99 games, and we didn't play wingspan for five months,. Until today that we remembered this game again and decided not to play the duel mode. We included all the bird cards from the Asian Expansion into the base game and directly played with the Oceania expansion map. Ah, it's so smooth and peaceful. Everyone playing their own game is the most joyful way to play a family game. With nectar, good birds, and nine bird nests, we played smoothly and freely. We played whatever we wanted, created our own combo strategies, took food when needed, and gambled on luck to catch mice. Thus, the 100th game ended peacefully.
This article led me to look back on the journey of Wingspan in the past three and a half years. Truly, every board game is a part of life. Since 2018, I've made it a habit to write the date of each game on the inside game box. Since August 2020, I have also added the names of the people I played with, to commemorate the moments of laughter or frustration we shared. Life indeed needs to be recorded.
